About Augusta, GA

Augusta was founded in the 1730s by order of James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony, who desired that a settlement be established at the northernmost point that the Savannah River became navigable. Oglethorpe named the town after Princess Augusta, mother of the future King George III. The town became established in 1777, and served as Georgia's state capital alternately with Savannah during the late 18th century. Oglethorpe, who had founded Georgia as an alternative to placing indigent British subjects in debtor's prisons, originally banned slavery in the colony of Georgia. The slavery ban, however, was short-lived, and Augusta was to become a leading textile producer in the 19th century thanks in large part to the area's cotton plantations.

Modern Augusta is known as a center of biotechnology, medicine and military in the region. Its three largest employers are the Medical District of Augusta (including Georgia Health Sciences University and University Hospital), the Savannah River Site nuclear facility and the U.S. Army Signal Center at Ford Gordon. Other companies that do major business in Augusta include T-Mobile, International Paper and Kellogg's. It's best known, however, for its famous golf course, the Augusta National Golf Club, which was designed by Alister MacKenzie and founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. Founded in December 1932, it began hosting The Masters in 1934. In August 2012, the previously all-male club admitted its first two female members, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore. Prior to this, women could play the course, but only as guests.
